What, you might ask, is that principle? Well, it’s that water in its gaseous state, also known as steam, possesses much more energy than water in its liquid or solid states. This higher energy content is due to a number of factors. First of all, water in the gaseous state is typically at a higher temperature than in the liquid state, especially if it has been heated in a boiler, it contains lots of heat energy. Second of all, particles in steam are moving around freely at high speeds instead of being held in fixed positions. When they collide with each other, that also produces plenty of kinetic energy.

When the turbine blades are turned by a concentrated blast of superheated steam, an energy transfer occurs between the steam and the turbine, allowing the turbine to drive the generator and produce electricity. Of course, some inefficiency is inevitable in that not all the energy in the superheated steam will be transferred to the turbine. Certain generators, known as heat recovery generators, help to circumvent this problem and minimize energy wastage by recycling the steam.
